Listening to Your Intuition: Sometimes You Just Know

“Trust your instincts. Intuition doesn’t lie.” Oprah Winfrey

Sometimes you just know things and you don’t know how, but you know it for sure. You know with every ounce of your being that the thing you know is right and correct and when you act on this knowing, it somehow helps you enormously in ways that you could not imagine.

However, I’ve found that when I do not listen to or follow this knowing and my life meets the time, the fact that I have not done the thing makes things harder. It is then I’ll think about that little voice that was telling me to do the course or go on the trip. I always find that the voice I dismissed as nothing or something that did not make sense in the context of my life in that moment, was right all along.

I’ve learnt that just because my knowing does not make sense in the moment it arises, it does not mean that it does not make sense in the wider context of my life. I’ve had to accept that I do not necessarily always have the broader perspective to see where the puzzle pieces fit in the landscape of my life experience, but I do know that trusting myself as my experience unfolds means that I’ll always be closer to where I need to be in the long run.

I think the fact that it is easy to dismiss that inner knowing makes it easier to keep moving in life, as to stop, listen and think about it, is to have to pause, which can make things uncomfortable. I find the inner voice appears to slink away when it is dimmed by doubts regarding its authenticity. Sometimes we can question where this knowing comes from and want the facts not feelings.

Maybe it comes down to how much we are trusting ourselves to be the leaders of our lives. How much do we trust ourselves to lead ourselves in the right direction? We are taught from a young age to go to school, work and do what our parents, our boss, our partners or everyone else says. When are we ever taught to really lead ourselves and listen to ourselves and not in a way that shuts everyone else out, but in a loving way that fiercely honours our purpose and what we are truly here for.

How does anyone else know what you are here for? And if you don’t know, maybe that could be a starting point for you. What are you here for?
